Trigger points are the tight, tender knots in muscle that drive a lot of neck and shoulder pain. The open question has always been whether needling actually changes the knot itself, or just how it feels. This study used diagnostic ultrasound to look directly at the tissue before and after treatment.
Across 39 ultrasound evaluations, the trigger points in the trapezius got measurably smaller after dry needling. The change was statistically significant. It is a small, early, retrospective signal, not a clinical trial, but it is objective, visual evidence that the tissue is changing, not just the sensation.

Methods
A retrospective case series of 13 adult patients (8 women, 5 men, mean age 49) who presented with neck, upper back, or shoulder pain over one month in early 2024. Hypoechoic spots in the trapezius were identified and measured on ultrasound, by elliptical area, before and after dry needling delivered in a Yin Bagua style.
Findings
Why it matters clinically
It supports something clinicians see but rarely measure: that needling a trigger point can change the structure of the tissue, not only the patient's report of pain. It does not prove long-term benefit or replace a controlled trial, and the effect here is small. It is a starting point for the larger, prospective work the question deserves.
